Borgo Magredo is the largest estate in the Friuli Region. Although most of the vineyards in the Friuli Region are made up of gravely soil, the soil of Borgo’s 500 acres of vineyards is so full of pebbles it almost appears that the vines have been planted in a stream bed. The word "Grave" originates from the word for stones or pebbles. The soil is so "meager" (hence the Italian word "magredo") that the vines are cultivated on grassy land with frequent irrigation and fertilization.
